When you have the unfortunate experience of coming down with the flu, sometimes the last thing you want to do is take over-the-counter medicines to try and combat the symptoms because their side effects can make you feel even worse. There is a pleasurable alternative: your hot tub! Here are some tips on how to get over flu symptoms with some relaxing soaks.
Force a Fever
When you get the flu, it is also accompanied by a fever. This is the body’s reaction to its battle against the flu virus. By elevating your body temperature with a soak in the hot tub, it increases your body’s ability to fight the virus. Turn your hot tub up as high as possible and try to soak for at least 20 minutes at a time, every 3 or 4 hours.
Sweat It Out
Raising your body temperature through a relaxing soak will also induce sweating that can help release toxins and free radicals, which elevate the symptoms of the flu. Continue to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Dehydration will make you feel worse.
Massage Aching Muscles
The soothing jets of your hot tub is a great way to get over flu symptoms. Much like a traditional massage, the hot water and therapeutic jets will release toxins from aching muscles, which you can then sweat out.
Improve Your Sleep
There is no magic pill for how to get over the flu and its symptoms, the only cure is time and plenty of rest. After your soak has relieved aching muscles, the steam has lessened nasal and chest congestion, and you are totally relaxed, you will get better-quality rest which will, in turn, quicken the healing process.
